Ilaria Zardo receives the "Giulio Cesare" medal. She will be awarded on September 11, 2015 at the Lepetit Cultural Center.

On September 11, 2015 at 6:00 p.m., Councillor Cecilia Fannunza, on behalf of the Capitoline Assembly, will award the prestigious "Giulio Cesare" Medal to Professor Ilaria Zardo in recognition of her study and research work and for her services to the name of the city of Rome.
Professor Ilaria Zardo of Eindhoven University of Technology was awarded the Herta Sponer Prize, which is given in Germany to a young female scientist for outstanding scientific work in the field of physics. The main goal of the prize is to encourage young female scientists through public awards and thus to inspire more women to pursue physics.

Dr. Zardo, from the Villa De Sanctis district of Rome, is an outstanding young researcher who studied at La Sapienza University. From June 2007 to September 2010, she earned her doctorate "Summa cum laude" on "Growth and Raman spectroscopy studies of non-gold-catalyzed semiconducting nanowires" in a collaboration between the University of Rome and the Technical University of Munich. For this, he received the "Best Thesis Discussion" award at the University of Rome. From 2012 to 2015, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology on a project on "Thermoelectric properties of single semiconductor nanowires". Dr. Zardo became well-known in her scientific community in a short time through relevant publications and established herself as an independent researcher as a postdoc. She currently holds a chair in experimental condensed matter physics at the University of Basel. The citation for the award stated, "For outstanding work in understanding the lattice dynamics and band electron structure of semiconducting nanowires with wurtzite and zincblende crystal structure. His innovative research makes an important contribution to the development of complex semiconductor nanostructures for thermoelectric applications."
